The ETIAS saga continues in the EU. Official sources have quietly wiped the “late 2026” launch date from the main ETIAS portal, a plot twist just as alarming as news that AI is about to overthrow humanity. (Seriously, has no one in seen iRobot?!) Humor aside, pumping the brakes on a massive, extremely complex system makes complete sense. Kudos to the EU officials who originally championed an ambitious timeline, but 100% more kudos to those pulling back on the reins to get it right.
The delay is largely tied to the rollout of the Entry/Exit System (EES). This is the prerequisite biometric scanning phase. That initial integration was plagued by long border queues, leaving both frazzled travelers and overworked border agents in limbo. Those bottleneck delays led to missed flights, botched tour connections, and derailed cruise departures. Postponing ETIAS gives the EU time to stabilize EES border operations before throwing another layer of digital requirements into the mix. So yay for coming to your senses.
Beware of Lines
This is why we exist: to give you the real scoop on what’s actually happening in the travel world. Right now, if you’re traveling to the Schengen area…admit it, “Schengen” just sounds cool, the ONLY things you really need are your passport, your face, and a serious amount of patience. The EES biometric system is fully active, and as of September 2026, the temporary rules allowing border agents to skip checks during long line surges have officially expired. With processing times roughly tripling per person, we’re talking multi-hour gridlock at major hubs—so give yourself plenty of layover buffer time, and don’t get all huffy puffy waiting in line!
